Castle - Review

This Review was written following only one rule - binge-watching the tv-show for around 10 hours with a lot of popcorn and then wirting down the thoughts - so you can trust this review is honest and truthful.

Plot Summary:

The plot of the series revolves around a mystery novelist named Richard Castle aiding a member of the local police department in solving crimes. He is initially taken in by the New York Police Department for questioning on a murder that is imitated from one of his novels. Castle then crosses paths with Detective Kate Beckett, who he helps to solve different cases.
He’s initially treated as something of an obstacle and nuisance before the cops realize that he has valuable inputs to the cases that need to be solved.Casting:

The show stars Nathan Fillion as the titular Richard Castle, with Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett. Members of the main cast along with Fillion and Katic included Jon Huertas as Detective Javier “Javi” Esposito, Seamus Dever as Detective Kevin Ryan, Tamala Jones as Dr. Lanie Parish, Ruben Santiago-Hudson as Captain Roy Montgomery, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, Richard’s daughter, Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers, Penny Johnson Jerald as Captain Victoria Gates, and Toks Olagundoye as Hayley Shipton.Production:

Created by Andrew Marlowe, the first episode of Castle aired on March 9, 2009. It was aimed to be a midseason replacement on the ABC network. The show’s ratings made it strong enough for a second season. Castle was then renewed by ABC with Season 2 consisting of 24 episodes (originally 13). Season 2 premiered on September 21 in 2009. Its popularity helped the series to be renewed for subsequent seasons.

Castle managed to last for eight seasons. On April 2016, a joint announcement from ABC and ABC Productions was made stating Stana Katic and Tamala Jones would not be back for a Season 9 of the series, in the event it was ever renewed. The show would be canceled on May 12th,, 2016 and the series finale aired on May 16th that same year.Review:

Castle is a new take on the crime drama series. As opposed to just using actors to star as cops on the center stage, the series takes the genre in a new direction where the protagonists aren’t necessarily tough. Richard Castle’s character is resilient, intelligent, creative, and charming. He is also the complete opposite of your traditional author, where they’re normally thought of as the quiet types who sit behind their desks and write for days on end.

That’s not the case for this guy. Suffering from a severe case of writers block, he looks to outside influences for inspiration in his future works. After a murder is imitated from one of the plots of his novels, he gets called in to assist the NYPD as a consultant of sorts. There he crosses paths with Detective Kate Beckett, of which they share an on-off romantic connection. The on-screen chemistry between Fillion and Katic’s characters is nothing short of amazing. Every time the two go on cases together, he’s forced to wear a bulletproof vest with the word ‘Writer’ emboldened on it. It makes him a very obvious target for the criminal element, but he loves going on cases anyway.

In regards to Nathan Fillion, he manages to deliver the same wit and charm that goes as far back as his days in Firefly. While it has the atmosphere of a police procedural, the show has does of comedy sprinkled here and there. Fillion’s character has numerous quips and one liners that makes him very likable. One would have to wonder why he didn’t take up to the stage as a comedian instead.

This is a show that I would recommend watching if you like comedy mixed in with police drama.Trivia:

  • Hyperion Books published the novel Heat Wave and actually included Richard Castle’s name on the cover of the in 2009.
  • Nathan Fillion read lines with 125 other actresses in order to find the perfect Beckett.
  • Producers saw the chemistry between Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic when Katic just got out of the hair and makeup room for a final callback between one other actress and herself. By the time she got out, she realized she was wearing a blouse that was too long and asked for a pair of scissors. By the time Stana saw Nathan getting himself some coffee, she greeted him. He asked if she wanted to run over some lines, she replied “No, but can you cut a straight line?” to where he replied “I can try.” Nathan cut her blouse shorter, and when the producers saw this, she got the part.
  • The Nikki Heat and Derrick Storm books that Castle writes are actually published in real life, with Richard Castle still credited as the author.
  • Actress Juliana Dever (Jenny Ryan) is Seamus Dever’s real life wife as well as his character’s wife in the show.
  • Nathan Fillion dons his old Firefly costume in one of the episodes of the series.
  • Detective Beckett often drinks from a coffee mugs that reads “Innocent Bystander”.
  • The show is closely tied with the Whedonverse, where several actors from Buffy the Vampire Slayer makes appearances. They include D.B. Woodside, Leonard Roberts, Ethan Erickson, Bailey Chase and Marc Blucas.
  • Richard Castle’s name is a tribute to real life author Stephen King, of which both have surnames that are attributed to the game of chess.
